Monforton Public Schools Announces Nonresident Open Enrollment Process for the 2026-2027 School Year

The 2023 Montana Legislature passed HB203 which opens nonresident enrollment across Montana’s public schools. The application process for nonresident families wishing to attend Monforton School District for the 2026-2027 school year is opening March 1, 2026. To provide families with a streamlined application experience, interested nonresident students (K-8) are invited to submit their enrollment applications by March 31, 2026. 

The application review process prioritizes the quality of education for resident children. The Board of Trustees will take action on submitted applications during a regularly scheduled meeting within 60 days of the March 31, deadline. The Board’s decision ensures that approved nonresident students will be placed in Monforton School District by mid-August 2026. 

The District emphasizes a commitment to nondiscrimination and aligns its approval decisions for nonresident students with the Long Range Strategic Plan.

Open Enrollment, House Bill 203, takes effect in July of 2024. Please Note: Out-of-district enrollment is not guaranteed.

Application Process:

  • All nonresident students, K-8, must submit an application to be considered for an enrollment agreement with Monforton School District #27 for the enrollment application period, March 1 through March 31.
  • Steps to submit an application are as follows:
  1. Complete a Nonresident Enrollment Request Form (Available March 1 through March 31)
  2. Complete an FP-14 Form from the Office of Public Instruction.  Parents/Guardians should complete Section 1 of the form only.   

NOTE: The completed FP-14 Form as well as behavior and attendance records must be submitted to the Monforton School District registrar.

Additional Information:

  • Each application will be assigned a random and confidential non-identifying number to keep the student’s name private. 
  • Not more than 60 days following the application deadline, the Superintendent will submit a list of applications to the Board of Trustees with recommendations.
  • Families who have complete applications will be notified the Friday prior to the Board Meeting via email notifying them of the recommendation for approval/disapproval of their child’s application. Families of applicants who are recommended for waitlist or disapproval may choose to discuss their child’s application in a closed executive session of the board.
  • Nonresident students enrolled in the Monforton School District must complete an application for an enrollment agreement each school year for the succeeding year. Continued enrollment is not guaranteed.
  • Acceptance is not guaranteed and decisions will be made in accordance with Policy 3141, Section 20-5-320, MCA, and the District Long Range Strategic Plan. 
  • The family of a nonresident child whose application for enrollment has been approved is responsible for transportation of the child and the child is not an eligible transportee as defined in Section 20-10-101, MCA.

Resident Enrollment

New/Incoming resident enrolling as students of the Monforton School District must follow the following steps:

  1. Call the Monforton School District registrar.
  2. Complete the Enrollment Forms.  
  3. If transportation via bus service is required, complete the Bus-service Sign-up Form,
  4. Submit the following records to the Monforton School District registrar:
  • Birth certificate
  • Immunization records
  • Proof of residency (utility bill or lease agreement)
